 Genre Conventions: Content


       Fitness magazines focus on nutrition, exercise, and health tips for the body. It’s a great way on how to learn a variety of fitness topics. The types of advertisements the magazine companies give are endless, examples of the advertisements they provide are supplements, exercise equipment, meals, and much more. Having celebrities on the front cover of fitness magazines works as an attention grabber and influences the audience. The magazine companies purposely use this method to increase the sales of their books. Celebrities also work as an inspiration to many people, they see a celebrity who has a lot of notoriety and they instantly want to look similar to them, with their fit body, which makes them want to buy the magazine. The influencers can also help the company expand their customer base. Fitness magazines have big bold italics on the cover. 


Genre Conventions: Production Techniques


      The big italics allows for people who are just passing by to be able to read the content  from a greater distance. The color and design of the magazine tells a lot about it.On the front cover of magazines the name of the influencer is usually in big letters next to them.A fitness magazine with a great amount of bright colors and women on the cover says that the audience leans more to the feminine side, while in contrast darker simpler colors with men on the cover, leans more to the masculine side.


  Institutional Conventions: How is the genre marketed


      In general, the figure of the person in front of the magazine is what determines the targeted audience. Older people with a more elderly shaped fit body are going to target the older generation, and this goes with any generation. Fitness magazines are usually sold in stores and any online distributor and they can be found to view in common areas like the laundromat or doctors office, etc. Social media is a tremendous marketing technique, it spreads the whole company's purpose of a fitness magazine like a wildfire. Social media can reach the attention of viewers from all over the world.

    On the cover of the magazine a woman in her late 20’s or early 30’s is shown wearing fitness attire. Immediately, you can see the large italics covered in femine appealing colors. Observing the content and design you can conclude that the magazine resides more to the feminine audience. The appearance of the woman, with her hair to the side and showing her vibrant glowing skin would attract the younger population. The large italics containing content regarding “Toned arms”, “Flat tum”, etc, all relate on how to get fit, giving the purpose of a fitness magazine.


     Sample #2 

     The muscular man on the cover has a bodybuilding pose, immediately concerning the fitness industry, The dull and gloomy appearance of the magazine cover intentionally grabs a more masculine audience. The front cover man is extremely muscular and grabs the attention of the viewers and influences them by conveying the message that they can look like him if they buy this specific magazine. On the left bottom corner there is the advertisement for an energy drink, associating that it helps you look more muscular. The large italics with wordings like “Huge Guns” are words that are usually used by men, that refers to their biceps.

Representation: 

      

                The people that are usually represented are fit and have a nice muscular or lean body. They are also sought to be very attractive. Looks are very important because the main whole purpose of a fitness magazine is to get or maintain a strong body. A great amount of athletes and influencers are part of the representation. As they influence the audience who seeks to have a fitness lifestyle as they do. Their aesthetic appearance and sometimes notoriety grabs the attention of the audience.
